One of three sited pieces at Lûce Project, Huntington Beach, CA
The Wintersberg/Furuta Fish Pond sculptures address the history of the site. The sculpture recognizes the Furuta family - early Japanese pioneers who settled and raised koi and waterlilies in Huntington Beach in the late 1800’s. The sculpture installation is sited very close to the original Furuta farm and is comprised of two elements - a freestanding column of etched blue granite with gold inclusions, stacked stone and stainless steel and a second artwork of textured laminated glass and stainless steel. The two sculptural elements work together. They honor the history and contribution of the early immigrants and their story in symbolic iconography with goldfish relief, lapis blue granite (water) and leaf pattern glass (agricultural history). Each sculpture is illuminated with subtle lighting that highlights the glass and stone textures and surfaces. The sculptures are integrated into the fountain. The fountain water feature suggests a weir and fall of a rural irrigation system. The fountain location provides a sight line from Gothard Street and shares the pathway’s angular vernacular design.
