The redesign of the California Street Bridge creates an iconographic pedestrian/vehicular thoroughfare for the City of Ventura within the constraints of the original bridge footprint. The concept and materials reference forms evoking the distinctive sea life and flora of coastal California. It is an iconographic statement that provides a sense of enclosure and protection and signifies the bridge as the destination link and path between downtown and the ocean across the 101 Freeway. The public art/bridge design was an interactive process, with meetings between the artist and stakeholders discussing visual possibilities and providing input and direction as the design evolved – a City/CalTrans project that started in 2007 and took twelve years to complete.
